Ski Helmets to Keep Your Noggin Safe on the Slopes

Ski Helmets

Although skiing and snowboarding can be a lot of fun, it’s important to remember that these sports involve travelling down a mountain at high speeds – protecting your head in case of a crash is a smart idea. Modern ski helmets offer a lot morethan just protection, so there are a ton of benefits to making the switch to wearing a helmet on the slopes.

How to Choose the Perfect Ski Helmet

Any ski helmet offers protection on the slopes. But, if you want to get the most out of your helmet, there’s a lot more to think about.

Ventilation

The ventilation system is an extremely important part of every helmet, and every manufacturer approaches venting differently. Most helmets have slots that allow cool air in and warm air out – look for slot designs that allow air to flow through the helmet while you’re rushing downhill. In addition, keep an eye out for closure systems on the vents. You may want to close the vents on extremely cold days to hold in as much heat as you can.

Ear Pads

Helmet ear pads are usually well insulated to help keep you warm. Many ear pads are soft and fleecy on the inside so that they don’t scratch your ears after a full day of skiing and riding. In addition, be sure to check whether the ear pads areremovable – this is important if your ski season extends all the way from the colddepths of winter to warm spring days.

Integrated Goggles

If you don’t already have a pair of ski goggles, there are many ski and snowboard helmets that come with integrated goggles. These are nice because there’s no question that the goggles and helmet are compatible, and you don’t have to worry about bringing along an extra piece of gear. However, integrated goggles do have their drawbacks. Many models don’t allowyou to change out the lenses for a different tint, and the goggles typically don’t have foam padding for insulation like traditional ski goggles. While you can usuallylift the integrated lens up on the helmet to get it off your face, doing so blocks the ventilation slots.

MIPS

New, premium helmets also feature one more layer of protection – multi-impact protection system, or MIPS. This system is designed to allow the helmet to rotate around your head during a crash, so that it cushions some of the rotational forces that are known to cause concussions.Right now, MIPS helmets tend to be slightly more expensive than traditional options. But, they can be worthwhile if you want to get the most protection out of your ski helmet.

Ski Helmet Fit

Getting the right fit for your ski helmet is extremely important. If it’s too big or toosmall for your head, it won’t offer maximum protection in the event of a crash.Your helmet should fit snugly without being too tight. If you shake your head andthe helmet moves, it’s too large for you. If it sits on top of your head rather thanover it, it’s too small. Keep in mind that you might be wearing a hat under your helmet during winter days, so make sure that your helmet fits with whatever you plan to put underneath it.
