Yoga has been around in its many forms for thousands of years. Nowadays, many love yoga for its unique combination of physical exercise, stretching cramped and tired muscles, stress-release and relaxation.
In order to get the most out of your yoga practice you need the right kind of clothing. The ideal yoga clothes work with your poses and stretches, rather than distracting or hindering your movements.
Yoga Clothing: General Notes
Depending on which type of yoga class you’re attending, the levels of physical activity (and how hot you get!) will vary. However it makes sense to consider that you will sweat. So it’s a good idea to opt for yoga clothing made from either naturally breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo and jersey or quick-drying, sweat-wicking and high-performance materials specially designed for exercise.
Colour & Cut
Low-cut, revealing or light-coloured yoga clothes are not recommended. Pale colours have the potential to be see-through no matter how thick you think the material is – add perspiration to the mix and they are even more likely to become revealing mid-session! Low-cut or revealing cuts will most likely threaten to expose you (or actually expose you) during your poses – which can be incredibly distracting for you and won’t help you make the most of your yoga time.
Your Yoga Wardrobe
Both men and women may think to throw on a trusty tee for their yoga practice. There are a few things to bear in mind when thinking about whether or not to wear a t-shirt to your yoga class.
Standard cut tees (i.e. fairly loose) are prone to riding up while you move and will slide up your torso (and even over your head) in inversion poses. Considering that you may spend a fair part of your class in Downward Dog position, this will soon get tiring. If you want to wear a loose t-shirt, consider tucking it into your yoga pants/shorts or wearing a closer-fitting top underneath.
Once you find a comfortable tee, try it out. Practice stretching and moving in it too make sure it isn’t too loose or restrictive. If you can’t find the ideal t-shirt for yoga, consider wearing a tank top.
Sleeveless tops or tank tops are a good idea for yoga. Not having sleeves means you are free to concentrate on your poses rather than pushing sleeves up or out of the way.

Yoga Pants or Leggings
Yoga bottoms come in a range of different options. Pants, leggings or looser options? Shirts, cropped or full-length? Many of these decisions will come down to personal preference but of course there are some qualities that are worth considering.
Full-length leggings or pants keep everything covered and help absorb sweat
3/4 or cropped styles will keep you cooler in hot classes
Ensure looser yoga trousers (for e.g. those that resemble lightweight sweatpants) don’t feature excess material around the ankle and feet that may pose a trip-threat
Whichever style you choose should be opaque, durable and of good-quality
