Human beings inherently want to feel protected and safe, and even the most intrepid of us crave warmth and security when we’re out in the wild. Therefore, when we are sleeping out in the wilderness, having the right kind of tent is very important. While a piece of cloth tied around a couple of poles may have once sufficed, people now demand something more secure and durable - a tent which can stand the test of time as well as harsher weather.
With the right tent, camping or sleeping outdoors can be a fantastic experience; with the wrong tent, camping can be miserable and uncomfortable. But how do you ensure you find the perfect tent? Read on for our tips…
First decide how many people will be using the tent and if it’ll be spacious enough. Tents are available from 1-person right up to family tents that can comfortably sleep 6 or more. If you’ve got small children with you, you can probably get away with a smaller tent than one for an equivalent number of adults. The tent should be spacious enough for the occupants to toss and turn in, with ample elbow room and without being claustrophobic. Just because you’re camping on your own, it doesn’t mean that you should automatically pick a 1-person tent – some people prefer the added space and flexibility of a 2-person tent.
The second most important thing to think about is which season and weather you’ll be taking the tent out in.
Some questions to ask yourself include: is the tent just for summer or is it for multi-season use? Will the tent be able to protect you from bugs and insects when camping in more tropical conditions? Will you be properly protected and will the tent offer enough privacy? The manufacturers’ product descriptions usually give information about where and when it’s suitable to use a tent.
There are many types of tent available. Nowadays you have the choice between longer, thinner ‘tunnel’ tents, pop-up tents, dome tents and freestanding tents (a tent which uses its poles to keep its shape). Additionally, look very closely at the weight and dimensions (packed and erected) of the tent on product pages – it’s no good ordering a very heavy tent if you plan to carry it on your back while hiking.
