Assembling Your Complete Ski Outfit
Skiing presents a clothing conundrum – the best ski conditions are often in the worst of weather. But with the right ski clothes, you can get out on the mountain no matter what the weather throws at you.
Ski and snowboard clothes go beyond just ski jackets. Here at AddNature, we also carry ski pants, ski gloves, ski socks, balaclavas, and children’s overalls so your whole family can fully bundle up while racing downhill or sitting on the lift for another lap.
Let’s cover the basics of each of how you can assemble a complete ski outfit:
Ski Jackets
Ski jackets come in a huge variety of styles, cuts, colors, and more. But before you start worrying about bells and whistles, the first thing you need to ask yourself when choosing a ski jacket is how warm you want it to be. Some ski and snowboard jackets are heavily insulated for mid-winter ski days, while others are light waterproof andwindproof shells more suitable for sunny spring days. Also be sure to look for jackets that are designed with Gore-Tex or another breathable material to prevent you from overheating when you’re making turnsdownhill.
Ski Pants
Ski pants are a lot like ski jackets – you’ll need to choose between warm, winter-ready pants or a light waterproof and windproof shell. On top of that, some ski pants have a bib and straps that go over your chest to keep them from falling down. If you don’t like the feel of the bib or want the hassle of the straps, there are also options that use a simple button closure.
Gloves and Mittens
The choice between gloves and mittens can be a tough one. Gloves give you dexterity, but they’re never quite as warm as a thick pair of mittens. That said, if warmth is a concern you can find gloves that have a pocket for hand warmers. Whichever you choose, look for adjustable cuffs that can be cinched down – these go a long way towards keeping out snow on powder days.
Socks
Ski socks need to be thick enough to keep your feet warm inside your boots, but not so thick that your feet start sweating. For cold days, it’s a good idea to opt for a thicker pair of socks or even two pairs of thinner socks. You’ll also need to choose between wool and synthetic materials. Wool socks won’t smell quite as bad at the end of the day, but they don’t dry out as well as synthetic socks if they do get wet.
Balaclavas
A balaclava is ideal for keeping your face warm on cold and windy days on the mountain. Consider choosing a balaclava that has holes for your mouth or nose – these will let you protect more of your face without building up condensation.
Overalls
When it comes to children’s ski clothes, you have an extra option on top of jackets and pants: ski overalls. Overalls are insulated onesies that can hold heat much more efficiently than multiple garments. Plus, they’re often less expensive than ski jackets and pants for growing children.
