Buff Running headgear
The BUFF is a multifunctional fabric tube. It comes in many styles, all of which are suitable for year-round use as an essential layer for the head and neck, and may be worn as a beanie, balaclava, or under-the-hat flap to keep the sun off your skin.
Here's how to use your buff:
Beanie
In a typical BUFF style clothing, a twist of fabric s usually transformed from the open tube shape into a skull-cap that may be worn in hot or cold weather. On a hot summer day, soak it in water to use as a heat sink on top of your head.
Headband
This traditional design wicks perspiration and keeps it from flowing into your eyes. A full BUFF is often too much fabric for the headband design. Consider the UV Half BUFF as a headband alternative or as an under-the-helmet garment.
Under-Helmet
The buff running headgear is a must-have for riders since it fits comfortably under a helmet. The thin layer protects you from the wind and keeps you warm. It also keeps your sweat from getting into your eyes.
Sleeping Mask
A simple around-the-head wrap (covering the eyes) filters out all light to allow you to sleep on aircraft and in bright campsites. Bonus: Is your seatmate a jerk? Extend the BUFF over your nose to keep undesirable scents at bay.
Wristband
A BUFF may twist to fit neatly on the wrist and is not confined to the head. Wipe perspiration from your forehead while running, and always have a hat on hand to sit idle and unobtrusively on your arm. If it's a hot day, put an ice cube in it and place it on your pulse point to stay cool.
Neck Gaiter
This simple covering across the neck is an excellent substitute for a scarf. On chilly fall days, I use the gaiter with a hat or as a soft buffer between my skin and crinkly jacket collars.
Face Mask
Pull it over your head and tuck it under your chin. The idea is to wrap the head in a tight wrap, with the cloth on the other side tucked around your neck. This is an effective way to block the sun in the summer, especially when worn under a ball cap.
Balaclavas
For this one, use two BUFFs, a life-saving tactic. Follow the "face mask" procedures above, then put on a second BUFF neck-gaiter style to seal off the head and neck from any cold (while keeping the face open) for optimum winter comfort and warmth.
