MAIER SPORTS TAJO 2 ZIP OFF - HIKING FUN IN INDIA

This month’s edition of product of the month takes us to exotic India. This backpacker’s paradise has long been on our intrepid colleague Florian’s travel bucket list. Working at AddNature, he spends his days juggling words to make sure the website is always filled with exciting content. He recently decided to take a break, put his out of office on and explore India’s south, starting in Mumbai. So why hiking trousers? Well, you may not know it, but India also offers some fantastic hiking routes! Secondly, a pair of trousers that are light, dry quickly and can easily be converted into shorts certainly can't hurt, right? Here’s what he had to say:

I must admit, a decent pair of hiking pants was long overdue in my wardrobe! I’ve been hiking several times, but up until now was always content wearing normal shorts. On my last hike I even wore swimming trunks! After receiving all kinds of questioning looks on that trip, I thought it was time to invest in some more professional equipment! The offer to test Maier’s Tajo 2 Zip Off trousers came at the perfect time, as doing some hiking was at the top of my agenda for my trip to India!

TO PRODUCT

My first impression: they felt great!

When I first put on the Tajo, I was amazed. They were so light! You could forget that you're even wearing trousers... they were super comfortable and felt pleasantly soft on the skin. When it comes to fit, Maier Sports is known for its wide range of sizes - everyone should be able to find the ideal size. I'm a slim 1.80 meters, so decided on size 48. They fit almost perfectly, and thanks to the integrated belt, making small adjustments was no problem. The zip function also worked wonderfully - you can convert the trousers into shorts in a flash. It was only the width of the trouser legs that took some initial getting used to - the cut reminded me of hip-hop-style baggy jeans from the early noughties. Wide trousers or not, it was high time to take the Tajo to the East!

The field test: India, here I come!

The first challenge for my test trousers was not a hike, but a monster 30-hour train journey, over 1,000 km from Mumbai to beautiful Kerala, in the southernmost region of India. I was extremely grateful to be wearing the comfortable Tajo trousers and they really made this marathon train ride a lot more pleasant! The trousers are not only nice and light, but also fantastically stretchy - super practical when climbing up onto three-storey sleeping platforms. In general, the elastic fabric made them very comfortable, offering enough freedom of movement for every position. During the day it was quite warm in the train, so I wore the trousers as shorts; at night it was surprisingly fresh, and I was happy to take the trouser legs out of my hand luggage and quickly turn my shorts into long trousers.
Of course, I wasn't in India just to ride trains - I also put the trousers through their paces trekking through rich green tea plantations, canoeing on Kerala's winding canals and exploring some of India’s exotic metropolises. The trousers were always a comfortable, light and reliable companion. The fabric dries surprisingly quickly, is pleasantly airy and noticeably breathable. The elasticity of the Tajo trousers is also beneficial for many activities. I also liked the fact that all pockets (two front, one back and one thigh) had zippers, ensuring important things like my passport, mobile phone or money couldn’t fall out, under any circumstances. This feature was especially reassuring for trips through this city, giving me peace of mind in cities where there was a threat of pickpocketing.

Conclusion: one pair of trousers for all occasions

I was definitely very impressed with the Tajo trousers – they made me realise what I had been missing, not owning a good pair of hiking trousers. Whether in the mountains or in the city, the light, stretchable material in combination with the well-thought-out details made life a lot easier. The only drawback for me was the rather wide cut. This may even be quite practical for some wearers, as it allows a lot of freedom of movement, but I would have liked a more modern, tighter cut at the lower leg, or at least some Velcro to adjust the waistband. Apart from these small quibbles, I think Maier Sports has come up with some well-thought-out, very versatile trousers for hiking, travel and leisure. The days I go hiking in my swimming trunks are definitely numbered!
