Summer time is barbecue time! Whether its sausages, steaks or veggie options on the grill - almost everyone loves a delicious cook-up with their mates. But, if you’re looking for something more powerful than a pretty basic charcoal grill, these gatherings will be limited to your garden, balcony or porch. High quality grills for campers are a rare thing indeed.
Gas stoves will usually help you prepare a few meals out and about – but they’re definitely missing that real barbecue feel. Primus wants to change all this with their Kuchoma Gas Cooker – allowing outdoor lovers to enjoy the feeling of sizzling their dinner too. So, in this month’s product review, our Category Manager and BBQ lover Sebastian will reveal whether Primus’ plan has worked out.

A Sacred Thing!

For me, barbecuing is as much a part of summer as skiing is a part of winter. In my hometown of Munich I often meet up with friends at the river Isar to swim, enjoy the weather and simply escape into nature for a bit.
On days like this, we don’t want to miss the chance to barbeque. But real charcoal grills are way too heavy and bulky to take with us and I’m not really a fan of disposable ones. They are bad for the environment and don’t work properly. So, I was all the more excited to test out the Primus Kuchoma – which is supposed to put an end to these problems.
Once I’d unpacked it, I was already pretty impressed: what a barbecue! The Kuchoma looks very well-made – solid but still pretty damn stylish. High-quality materials such as stainless steel and brass make for long-life BBQ joy and a great looking design. Its minimalist Scandi design is even neatly rounded off by an oak handle.
With its compact construction, transport shouldn’t be a problem. The barbeque fits into all large backpacks and – tipping the scales at 4.5 kg – should be easy to carry. Once its legs are unfolded and locked, the Kuchoma feels rock-solid. The adapter that’s supplied with it fits all Primus gas cylinders (but you’ll need an extra adapter to use cylinders from other companies). BTW: the Kuchoma was recognised with an award at ISPO: the world’s biggest sports fair. So, it all sounds promising – but enough of the talk, time to fire up the grill!

Pure Barbeque Action!

Every good barbecue needs good company. That’s why I took the Kuchoma with me when I went to meet my friends at the river- much to the delight of everyone present, because the grill did a great job!

The removable grilling surface is made entirely from cast aluminium, which distributes the heat evenly. You can even fry sausages on the edge of the grill without any problems. The tubular burner also plays its part in perfectly distributing the heat. Thanks to its special non-stick coating, food doesn’t stick to the grill and it’s a cinch to clean after. Under the grill you’ll find a collection tray for food residue and dripping fat. This can also be easily removed and quickly emptied. Super practical: grill grid and drip tray are both dishwasher-safe!

With its Piezo firing feature, the 2500 Watt strong Kuchoma Barbeque is immediately ready for use. A 230g gas cartridge will fire it up for 75 minutes – which is more than enough time to successfully feed a large bunch of hungry campers. With the lid closed, the indirect heat will cook your food perfectly. Thanks to the grill’s wide range of heat adjustment options, you can cook everything exactly the way you like it.

Conclusion – Pack the Barbeque!

I really liked the Primus Kuchoma and can definitely recommend it to other barbeque fans looking to grill in the Great Outdoors. It’s probably not the best option for lightweight camping and at £150.99 it’s not the cheapest either, but you get a high-quality, high-performance-grill which will be a lot of fun for many years to come. For future summer evenings outdoors, this grill is an absolute essential!
