Award-winning high-performance gear since 1974
It was a shared passion for mountaineering by students Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley that led them to found what would eventually become the world-famous company, Marmot. The story began in 1971 when Eric Reynolds and Dave Huntley, two students at the University of California, Santa Cruz, were in Alaska for a school project on glaciology. It was here that their idea for the creation of the Marmot Club came into fruition. The name Marmot refers to a group of social ground squirrels that live in mountainous regions. In order to be initiated as a member of the Marmot Club, you had to scale a glacier peak with another member of the club. The two founders then started to produce prototypes for different products during their study periods and in their dorm room. Initially they designed a down vest, sweater and parka, followed by three different types of sleeping bags, one of which, the PIKA, could withstand temperatures of -45 degrees Fahrenheit (this is now known as the CWM). Shortly afterwards, they opened a small store in a 100-year-old stone building near downtown Grand Junction in Colorado with another climbing enthusiast, Tim Boyce. In 1974, the company was officially named Marmot. While climbing in Peru, Tom met famous movie maker Mike Hoover, who commissioned Marmot to make 108 puffer jackets for a movie called The Eiger Sanction, featuring Clint Eastwood. Marmot was one of the first manufacturers of outdoor clothing that employed the use of Gore-Tex during the 1970s. This material revolutionised outdoor leisurewear in the 1970s and 1980s, being both completely waterproof and windproof, while remaining breathable to maximise comfort. To this day, the Marmot team stays committed to innovating merchandise of the highest quality that meets the demands of their customers.
