Lightweight and Durable MSR Tents

MSR Tents

MSR is revered amongst backpackers and mountaineers for producing some of the most lightweight and durable tents on the planet. This company has a long history of innovation in mountain equipment, and its current tent lineup represents the culmination of decades of experience.

Why Choose an MSR tent?

MSR tents aren’t cheap – but as any backpacker, climber, or mountaineer who has used one will tell you, the price is well worth it. MSR tents are built to last, with durable ripstop fabrics and poles that can stand up to the most extreme mountain conditions. If you take good care of one of these tents, it can easily last a decade’s worth of punishing trips.Of course, MSR also put a lot of effort into making sure that your tent won’t holdyou back. MSR backpacking tents are extraordinarily lightweight for their size. Many of MSR’s lightest models are comparable to ultralight shelters in bulk, yetyou get the advantage of a floor and vestibule. Plus, these tents offer an impressive amount of livable space inside given how little they weigh.

Single Wall vs. Double Wall MSR Tents

The biggest difference between MSR tents is whether they are built with a singleor double-wall design. Double-wall tents are probably what most backpackers areused to – they include an inner tent that often has a mesh upper half or mesh panelling for ventilation and a fully waterproof rain fly. Single wall tents combine these two parts into a single unit, with the tent body consisting entirely of waterproof material.Single wall tents have the advantage of being extraordinarily lightweight and compact. After all, there’s only about half as much material to carry as for a double-wall tent. Also, they can be pitched extremely fast since there’s no fly to worry about. However, single wall MSR tents are typically reserved for serious mountaineering expeditions when weight and the need to pitch in a whiteout are major concerns. That’s because single-wall tents tent to form a lot of condensation inside – while there are vents, opening them typically exposes your tent to wind and cold.In addition, since single-wall tents lack a vestibule, there’s not much room for gear storage. While single-wall MSR tents can be used more generally, not many backpackers want to experience condensation every single night.Double-wall tents are thede facto standard in the rest of the outdoor community because they don’t add too much weight and also largely eliminate condensation. Double-wall MSR tents are also more versatile, because you can use them in a more humid environment without developing a rainforest-like environment insideyour tent.
