Dome Tents & Igloo Tents
The igloo or dome tent is a classic we appreciate for its versatility and practical construction. It's easy to set up and has a lower overall weight thanks to fewer parts. It's supported by at least two poles that pass through channels attached to the inner tent, crossed in the middle and attached to the tent floor. A geodesic igloo uses multiple poles that also cross at different points. This makes the tent extra stable. By crossing the poles, the dome tent stands all by itself and only needs to be secured with a few pegs (as well as its attached guy ropes). Depending on the model, the inner and outer tent may be separated from each other, so you can also choose to just sleep under an airy mosquito net in nice weather.

Dome Tents for Spending the Night Outside

Dome Tents

Dome tents are the most popular style of tent design, and for good reason. These tents are easy to set up, offer excellent protection from the wind and elements, and come in a huge variety of sizes and with an even greater diversity of features. At addnature.co.uk, we carry almost 250 dome tents to choose from so you can find your perfect home in the great outdoors.

Why Choose a Dome Tent?

Dome tents, also known as igloo tents, offer almost everything you could ask for in a tent design. To start, they’re easy for a single person to pitch. Most use one or a handful of collapsible poles which crisscross over the top of the tent, and they’re designed to make the setup and takedown process as simple as possible. Better yet, most dome tents are freestanding, meaning they can be staked into the ground but don’t need to be guyed out to trees or additional stakes. On top of that, dome tents perform well in harsh conditions. Their shape allowsthem to shed rain and to protect you even when the rain seems to be flying in sideways. Plus, dome tents stand up well in windy conditions. The only downside to dome tents is that they offer less living space than other tent designs, like tunnel tents. That’s because the walls in a dome tent are relatively slanted. As a result, you can’t sleep all that close to the edge of the tent floor or else you’ll wake up covered in condensation.

How to Pick the Best Dome Tent for You

Weight

The first thing to consider when choosing a dome tent is how you plan to use it. If you’re backpacking, weight is a major concern – your tent is one of the heaviest items you’ll carry, so minimising tent weight goes a long way towards improving your backpacking experience. If you plan to car camp with your dome tent, on the other hand, weight may not be a concern at all. Dome tents intended for backpacking can be used for car camping, but not the other way around.

Capacity

The next thing to consider is how many people plan to sleep in your tent. Dometents come in a range of sizes to sleep just a single person or up to six or more. You can base your capacity needs on the largest group you’ll ever have in your tent, but choosing capacity based on the number of people you typically camp withis a good method for most backpackers and car campers. Backpackers will want to keep in mind that a higher capacity tent is typically a heavier tent.

Apses

Large apses for storing gear are one of the standout features of dome tents, particularly for backpackers. These vestibules are essential for keeping gearprotected from the elements while you sleep. While many dome tents only offer one apsis in front of the main entrance, many offer two apses – either in the front and rear of the tent, or on either side. Having multiple apses can allow your group to better organise stuff, but having one large apsis may allow you to use the space more efficiently.
