Cooking and Dining Sets for Backcountry Trip

Cooking Sets

Whether you’re a gourmet camp chef or a one-pot kind of camper, it’s important to have a versatile cooking and dining set with you in the backcountry. For car camping, having the right cooking set means being able to whip up any meal youwant and ensuring that there are enough plates, cups, and bowls that you don’thave to ration tableware. On backpacking trips, cooking and dining gear can be the difference between a lightweight camp kitchen and an overly heavy pack thatslows down your trip.

Car Camping vs. Backpacking Kitchen Gear

The first thing you need to decide when choosing a cooking and dining set for your camp kitchen is whether you need backpacking gear or car camping gear. Backpacking pots and tableware can perform just fine for car camping, but tend to be smaller than most campers would like for preparing a meal with fresh food and serving multiple friends. On the other hand, car camping cookware is often too bulky and heavy to takedeep into the backcountry. But, the advantage to car camping cooking and dining equipment is that it mirrors the items you’d have at home. While dedicated car camping cooking and dining sets tend to be more durable and slightly smaller, you can actually supplement your dining set with items from your home kitchen as needed.

Choosing a Cooking and Dining Set for Backpacking

If you need a cooking and dining set for backpacking, you’ll find yourselfcompromising between weight, size, versatility, and price. On a backpacking trip, you may only bring along a single pot – in which case, that pot needs to be able to cook every meal you plan to eat during your trip. The first thing to consider is how much cooking capacity you need. For one or twopeople, a one-litre pot may be large enough. For more than two people, you’ll likely want to size up to a two-litre pot or larger. Some cooking sets come with pots of multiple sizes, which gives you flexibility as you can bring different pots on different trips. However, buying multiple pots is more expensive than buying a single pot of the same quality. A good rule of thumb is to shop for a pot for the size of group you most often backpack in, similar to how you would decide what sizetent to buy.Once you’ve settled on the size of your pot, and ideally the number of plates and bowls you need as well, there are a few other things to think about.

  • Material - Stainless steel pots and dining gear tends to weigh more than plastic or aluminium gear, but it’s also more durable. Titanium cookware is both lightweight and durable, but it’s much more expensive.
  • Foldability - A lot of plates and bowls, and even some pots, are designed to fold down to take up less space in your pack. This can be extremelydesirable to save space, but you need to be careful when holding them as they canfold unintentionally while you have food inside them!
  • Stacking - Some camp kitchen sets that include both pots and tableware are designed to stack together. This can be a great way to save space, although you can’t customise your kitchen set to quite the same extent without compromising the set’s ability to stack.
