Most importantly, the stiffness of the sole, the offset (how far the sole is rounded to allow good rolling) and the upper construction determine how a model positions itself within the categories. For this reason you'll find the categories A-B-C-D for each model. This gives you an idea of how stiff the shoe is.

D = very firm and fully crampon proof (step-in/automatic crampons).
C = fixed and conditionally crampon resistant (strap-on/semi-automatic crampons)
B = firm grip and solid but flexing sole for trekking and hiking
A = soft, very good flexing structure
