Horst Dassler gave rise to Arena, an Italian make of competitive swimwear, in 1973. Currently, company's headquarters are in Tolentino, Italy. Adidas sold Arena to the company Descente Ltd. in 1990. However, the company is still in the business of selling its goods. It serves a global network of distributors and licensees, with presence in more than 100 countries throughout the world. Moreover, it has subsidiaries in France, Germany, and the United States.
History of the brand
Horst Dassler, the son of Adidas founder Adolf Dassler, founded Arena in 1973 to produce competitive swimwear. After watching swimmer Mark Spitz's incredible performance at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, where he won 7 gold medals, Dassler had the idea to start making sportswear. The company came up with its first line of swimwear in 1973, the "Skinfit,". This swimwear was of an incredibly light fabric that weighed only 18 grams. One year later, Australian swimmer Shane Gould, who had taken home five Olympic medals in Munich, and Arena negotiated their first sponsorship deal. Arena unveiled a swimwear line under her name. Also the brand recruited additional individual competitors for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal after realizing that sponsorship was essential to the success of his brand.
Arena developed the "Flyback" suit in the 1980s, thinning the straps to enlarge the shoulder openings. The "AquaRacer" (1990) and the "X-Flat" (1997) were more swimsuits that were introduced, and the company kept looking for new talents to sponsor. Franziska van Almsick and Alexander Popov were among the athletes signed. Recently in 2019, Arena also got the global rights of the Italian swimwear brand Diana.
