Climbing Bags

Climbing Bags for Every Adventure

Climbing involves a lot of equipment, from ropes and harnesses to anchors and chalk. To make carrying everything even more of a challenge, most climbing days require standard hiking supplies including food and water. Thankfully, addnature.co.uk carries a wide array of climbing bags to help you carry your gear to the crag or mountains. With brands like Arc’Teryx, Black Diamond, Deuter, and more, you’re sure to find a climbing pack that can easily fit everything you need.

Choosing the Right Climbing Pack

There’s no single best climbing bag for every climber or every adventure. So, you’ll need to think about exactly how you plan to use your climbing pack when choosing the features that are important to you. With that in mind, here are some of the most common things you’ll need to decide on when choosing a climbing pack:

    • Size - The volume you need in a climbing bag depends on how long you’re planning to spend climbing and how much gear your route requires. If you’re only out for a day trip and sport climbing on a bolted route, you likely won’t have much technical gear with you beyond your rope and quickdraws. In that case, a 15-25-litre pack may be all you need to carry everything you need. On the other hand, a long day of technical traditional climbing may require a pack that is 40 litres or more to bring all your anchors and extra food. Finally, if you’re planning on a multi-day adventure, consider a pack that’s 50 litres or more in volume.
    • Weight - It’s important to keep in mind that the weight of your pack is part of the weight you’ll be hauling up a rock face with you. For many climbers, a more lightweight pack means that they can climb somewhat faster and be less tired at the end of the day. However, keep in mind that lightweight packs typically save weight by using less burly fabrics, so they may be less durable than a heavier pack of the same size.
    • Organisation - There is a virtually endless combination of organisational features when it comes to climbing bags. If you’re carrying your rope to the trailhead, it can be extremely helpful to have a top flap that can cinch down to hold the rope. Some climbers prefer side or bottom access panels to get into their packs, which helps when reaching for items that have been buried in the bag. Alpine climbers will want to look for alpine-specific organisational features, such as tool loops and crampon pockets.

Rope Bags and Haul Bags

If you just need a bag for carrying your gear to the base of the crag, rather than for carrying your stuff with you up a route, a ropebag or haulbag may be best suited to the purpose. These bags are typically small in volume – less than 25 litres – and offer just enough compartments for your rope and some technical climbing gear. Rope bags in particular are useful because they offer huge openings so you can easily take the rope in and out of the bag.
